In the U.S. system, inheritance laws are particular to every state or territory, therefore, what applies in one state or territory, might not apply in another. This makes it important, for people with assets in Puerto Rico, to understand local laws regarding wills and probate proceedings.

Wills:

A will in Puerto Rico, will allow you to decide certain aspects of how you prefer your assets to be divided amongst your inheritors once you are deceased. With the most recent changes of the law, the process of signing your will is easier and more manageable than it used to be a few years ago. In the comfort and the confidentiality of our office, we provide counsel adapted to the needs of each client, and we draft and sign wills in full compliance with the law, ensuring that each client’s final wishes are carried out.

Probate Proceeding:

In general, a probate proceeding is the process by which an estate is opened, administered, divided and closed. In Puerto Rico, this procedure is needed to validate a will so that the assets of the deceased person can be distributed. If there is no will or if a will does not meet the requirement of the law, a process known as the Declaration of Inheritors needs to take place. Whether your particular case requires a validation of a will or a Declaration of Inheritors, we guide you through all the steps and we prepare all the legal documents required for the assets to be ready to be divided amongst the inheritors, or ready to be sold.
